What does it take to be a good math teacher?

The Education Week article Essential Qualities of Math Teaching Remains Unknown states how the Mathematics Presidential Report is unable to define what a “good” math teacher really is; is college preparatory work the most important qualification? Teacher development? Experience? Pure enthusiasm?  Researchers were unable to conclude, and the National Mathematics Advisory Panel is therefore calling for more research on how to improve teacher education.
